Warning Signs
The earlier I notice these signs in myself, the easier it is to step back. None of these by themselves is a crisis, but if more than two are happening, it is time to act.
- Spending more than I planned to lose in a session.
- Chasing losses by depositing more after a bad streak.
- Hiding gambling from my partner, family or friends.
- Borrowing money to gamble, or selling things to fund deposits.
- Feeling anxious or depressed when I cannot play.
- Skipping work, sleep or social plans to gamble.
- Mood swings tied to wins and losses.
Tools I Use to Stay in Control
- Deposit limits. Every casino on my list lets me set a daily, weekly or monthly cap. I set mine before I start a session.
- Session time limits. I set a 60-minute timer. When it rings, I stop, no exceptions.
- Loss limits. I pre-decide how much I am willing to lose and I close the tab when I hit it.
- Reality checks. Most casinos pop up an in-session reminder every 30-60 minutes. I do not silence it.
- Self-exclusion. If I need a break, I self-exclude for 24 hours, 7 days, or permanently.

BetStop: The National Self-Exclusion Register
BetStop is the national self-exclusion register for Australia. Once I register, every ACMA-licensed gambling operator must block my account. It is free, takes about ten minutes to set up, and can be set from three months to a lifetime. It is the most powerful tool I know if I cannot stop on my own.
If You Are Worried About Someone Else
If a friend or family member is showing the warning signs, the best thing I have done is talk about it without judgement. Gambling Help Online has resources for friends and family — they have walked me through how to start that conversation, and what to do if the person pushes back.
